welcome to cam country

Every day on my way to work I listen to The Bobby Bones Show. The past few days it's been all about #ILoveWomen AKA Women in Country Week. One thing I love about Bobby and his crew is how supportive they are of emerging country artists. You get your song played by Bobby Bones, you're going to be sitting pretty. Country fans like myself gravitate towards Bobby because even though he's not just a radio personality with a good voice. He's a real person and you feel that when you listen to his show. And how can you not love a radio show that does a Friday morning dance party?!

Alright, now that you all know how much I love The Bobby Bones Show, let's move on to the main reason for this post. Yesterday, as part of Women in Country Week, new country artist Cam visited Bobby in the studio, and this morning he played her single, "Burning House". I immediately pulled up Shazam on my iPhone so I could tag the song and buy her EP album once I got to work.

"Burning House" haunted me like no song has since the first time I heard my beloved duo, The Civil Wars. Cam can sing--no doubt about that. Her sound is deep, rich, and powerful with a touch of twang and legitimate pain. Cam, where have you been all my life?!

Her EP is titled Welcome to Cam Country, and I say welcome to country indeed. I can't wait to see where this girl goes. Bring on the music, Cam!

Music Musings: It's Pioneer Day!

Waiting for a new album has been torture but Pioneer day is finally here! The Band Perry doesn't disappoint (not that I had any doubts). I've been listening to the album on repeat all day. So far I'm especially loving "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" and "Mother of Mine". I'm sure I'll know all the songs by heart by the end of the week.

It's been over two years since I first heard The Band Perry's breakout hit song of 2011: "If I Die Young".

Ironically, it was my best friend Sarah--miles away on her church mission in Illinois--who introduced me to the group. In one of her letters she told me about this song ("If I Die Young") she heard playing that was absolutely amazing. She included some of the lyrics and tasked me with finding the artist. That's when the love affair began.

I spent that summer back home in Everett, WA living with my family before heading off to The Windy City for grad school. Still budding new artists, The Band Perry was playing the state fair circuit. My entire family, including my brother's boyfriend Ian, attend their concert. Third row baby.

After the show we waited in line for two hours to meet Reed, Kimberly, and Neil. They are truly some of the most warm-hearted, gracious people I've ever met. Meeting them was a true thrill and something I'll always remember. 

Music Musings: Elenowen

A few weeks ago I discovered Elenowen, a husband-wife musical duo. I can't get enough of their smooth, folksy sound and poignant, deep lyrics. This is my kind of music--Indie soul. Is that a real term? Probably not.

My favorite song is "Flying for the First Time". I constantly find myself humming it throughout the day. I love how the lyrics convey the complicated mix of strength, vulnerability, and fear we experience in life.

Since my discovery of Spotify I don't buy a lot of music, but I snatched up Elenowen's EP album without hesitation.  Check out the music video and lyric video below. Amazing.
